Korean American Day is observed in the United States every January 13, celebrating the contributions of Korean Americans to American society. This observance was first proclaimed by President George W. Bush in 2003 to mark the 100-year anniversary of the arrival of the first Korean immigrants in the U.S. The Southern California Korean College Students Association (SCKCSA), founded in 1970, organizes the annual Korean-American Day Seminar, which features workshops that focus on Korean culture, heritage, media, entertainment, and career building. The Korean American community is the fifth largest Asian American subgroup in the U.S., with approximately 1.7 million individuals, according to the 2010 Census. The day emphasizes the importance of Korean Americans in enhancing the country’s cultural diversity and economic strength.
