January 14: Forest Conservation Day (Thailand)

National Forest Conservation Day is observed in Thailand every January 14. This observance was established following devastating floods in southern Thailand in November 1988, which were exacerbated by forest destruction. In response, King Rama IX signed two executive decrees on January 14, 1989, to halt logging concessions. The Cabinet approved the proposal to proclaim this day as National Forest Conservation Day on January 9, 1990. The main objective is to emphasize the importance of forest conservation to mitigate global warming and prevent natural disasters. In honor of this day, the Royal Forest Department organizes a tree planting campaign, offering free saplings at plant nursery stations for individuals to plant, contributing to efforts against deforestation.
