John Chilembwe Day is observed in Malawi on January 15 to honor the memory of Reverend John Chilembwe, a key figure in the country's struggle for independence. Chilembwe, who was educated in the U.S. and influenced by abolitionist thinkers, founded schools and churches in Nyasaland (modern Malawi). His efforts faced severe opposition, culminating in the destruction of his establishments by plantation owner William Jervis Livingstone in 1913. In response, Chilembwe and his followers staged an uprising on January 29, 1915, which resulted in the deaths of three white plantation staff, including Livingstone. The uprising lacked local support, leading to Chilembwe's unsuccessful attempt to flee to Mozambique, where he was killed by officials on February 3, 1915. His legacy is commemorated in Malawi, where his portrait appears on the 500 kwacha note.
