January 15: Teachers’ Day (Venezuela)

Teachers' Day is observed in Venezuela every January 15, commemorating the efforts of teachers who fought for their rights and educational reforms. The holiday was established by President Isaías Medina Angarita to honor a group of teachers who formed an association on January 15, 1932, aimed at improving the Venezuelan educational system. Despite facing opposition from the totalitarian regime of Juan Vicente Gómez, these educators continued their struggle for reform. The date was temporarily changed to November 29 during Marcos Pérez Jiménez's rule, to coincide with the birthday of Andrés Bello, a notable Venezuelan educator. However, after the fall of Jiménez's dictatorship, the original date of January 15 was reinstated. On this day, teachers are recognized for their contributions to education and the ongoing fight for their rights.
