January 17: Ram Khamhaeng Day (Thailand)

Ram Khamhaeng Day is observed in Thailand every January 17 to commemorate the discovery of the Ram Khamhaeng Inscription by Prince Mongkut in 1833. This day honors Pho Khun Ram Khamhaeng Maharat, the third king of the Phra Ruang dynasty, who ruled the Sukhotai Kingdom from 1279 to 1298 and is known as the “Father of the Thai language” for creating the Thai script. The inscription, regarded as the earliest example of the Thai script, was found among the ruins of the ancient city of Sukhotai, the former capital of the Sukhotai Kingdom. Although not a public holiday, special events are held at the Sukhothai Historical Park, featuring historical re-enactments and cultural performances to celebrate the occasion. The day highlights the significance of Ram Khamhaeng's contributions to Thai culture and history, including the establishment of Theravada Buddhism as the state religion and the introduction of ceramic making from China.
