The Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of the Donetsk Airport, also known as Cyborg Remembrance Day, is observed in Ukraine every January 20. This memorial day honors those who defended the Donetsk airport from Russia-backed separatists during a critical period from May 26, 2014, to January 22, 2015, amidst the war in eastern Ukraine. The defense of the airport, which became one of the bloodiest battles of the conflict, involved Ukrainian troops and volunteer formations resisting multiple assaults from pro-Russian separatists. The term "cyborgs" was used to describe the defenders, highlighting their extraordinary resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. The airport, once a significant location, was ultimately destroyed, symbolizing the intense struggle for control in the region. The day was officially established in 2021 by Ukraine's Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, following years of unofficial observance by the defenders and their families.
