January 20: Tamborrada (Spain)

Tamborrada is a drum festival celebrated in San Sebastián, Spain, on January 20 each year. The festival lasts for 24 hours and features participants dressed as cooks and soldiers marching throughout the city. Its origins date back to the end of the 18th century during the Second and Third Carlist Wars, when citizens began mocking the soldiers stationed in San Sebastián by using buckets and hardware from water-pumps in their processions. Today, the celebration includes drumming parades with both men and women, although initially, only men participated. Adults often gather in "gourmet clubs" to enjoy meals they prepare themselves, while children also partake in a version of the festival, dressing in traditional Napoleonic soldier garments and marching around the city. The Children's Tamborrada was introduced in 1961 to promote cultural heritage among younger generations.
