The celebration includes parades, concerts, community celebrations, and clean-up activities, typically lasting about a week, with January 21 designated as a special non-working holiday. The creation of the BARMM was a result of peace negotiations aimed at resolving the Moro conflict, which began in 1968. The term "Bangsamoro" combines the Old Malay word "bangsa," meaning "nation" or "race," with "Moro," referring to the Filipino Muslims.
