Tatiana Day, also known as Students’ Day, is observed in Russia every January 25. This holiday celebrates Saint Tatiana, the patron saint of students, and marks the founding of the first Russian university in 1755 by Empress Elizabeth. The inaugural celebration took place in 1850 at Moscow State University, starting with a prayer in the university chapel and followed by citywide festivities. The holiday was discontinued in 1918 after the October Revolution but was revived in 1995 with the reopening of the Church of Saint Tatiana on the university campus. In 2005, President Vladimir Putin officially declared January 25 as Russian Students’ Day. The day coincides with the end of the first academic term in most Russian universities, allowing students to celebrate without the stress of impending exams.
