January 26: Heroes’ Day (Cayman Islands)

National Heroes' Day is observed in the Cayman Islands every January 26. Established in 2003, this public holiday celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to nation-building and community service, as recognized by the National Heroes Law passed in 1993. The first National Hero was named in 1994, honoring James Manoah Bodden for his role in establishing Cayman Airways. Sybil Ione McLaughlin followed as the second National Hero in 1996. On each National Heroes' Day, new Caymanians are declared national heroes, and a Wall of Honor in George Town commemorates over five hundred individuals who have received this distinction. The day serves to recognize and celebrate the contributions of these heroes to the development of the islands.
