Auschwitz Liberation Day is observed in the Netherlands on the last Sunday of January, commemorating the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945. The remembrance ceremony, initiated by the Netherlands Auschwitz Committee in 1993, takes place at the Auschwitz Memorial in Amsterdam’s Wertheimpark, featuring a monument created by Dutch artist Jan Wolkers. The ceremony begins with a silent procession from the Amsterdam town hall to the memorial, where the mayor delivers a speech, and the Chief Rabbi of Amsterdam recites memorial prayers, including Yizkor and Kaddish. The event also honors Romanis and Sintis who perished in Auschwitz alongside Jews, culminating in the laying of wreaths and flowers. Although it is not officially recognized as a memorial day in the Netherlands, the committee continues to advocate for its official status.
