National Trans Visibility Day, or Dia Nacional da Visibilidade Trans, is observed in Brazil every January 29. This day commemorates the Travesti e Respeito campaign, initiated in 2004 by transgender activists in front of the National Congress, aiming to highlight the struggles of transgender individuals and promote their rights. The campaign arose in collaboration with the National STI and AIDS Program of the Ministry of Health, which sought to address the high rates of sexually transmitted infections often linked to the limited employment opportunities available to transgender people. Despite Brazil's progressive stance on LGBT rights, including legal recognition for transgender individuals, the country has the highest number of homicides of transgender people globally, accounting for about 40% of such murders since 2008. National Trans Visibility Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing marginalization faced by transgender and non-binary individuals within the LGBT community and emphasizes their right to safety and belonging.
