Ministry of Religious Affairs Day, observed in Indonesia every January 3, commemorates the founding of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in 1946. Although it is not a public holiday, the day is marked with official events. The establishment of the Ministry was proposed multiple times during the preparations for Indonesian independence, ultimately gaining support from the Central Indonesian National Committee on its third proposal. The Ministry took over responsibilities related to marriage, mosque and hajj affairs from the Ministry of Home Affairs, religious courts from the Ministry of Justice, and religious education from the Ministry of Education. Indonesia, a secular state, guarantees freedom of religion, with over 80% of its population identifying as Muslim, alongside other practiced religions such as Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. The Ministry of Religious Affairs includes units responsible for each of the six official religions in the country.
