Indonesian Primate Day, observed in Indonesia every January 30, is a working holiday established in 2014 to promote the preservation and protection of Indonesian primates and their habitats. The day commemorates the anniversary of ProFauna Indonesia's Primate Freedom Tour, an awareness campaign that took place across Bali and Java, aimed at encouraging public engagement in primate conservation. With around 40 primate species in Indonesian forests, these animals play crucial roles in maintaining ecosystem balance, including seed dispersal and pollination. However, approximately 70% of Indonesian primates are threatened with extinction due to illegal trade, poaching, and habitat loss, with the illegal pet trade being the primary threat. Schools, workplaces, and communities are encouraged to participate by hosting events and creating materials that highlight primate conservation messages. ProFauna Indonesia, the nonprofit organization behind the holiday, focuses on forest conservation, wildlife protection, and education initiatives.
