The Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival is observed in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, India, every January 31. It is the most significant ancestor veneration festival for the Ahom people, an ethnic group believed to have migrated from China to the Brahmaputra valley in 1228. The festival involves offerings to ancestor spirits, known as Dam, and gods, referred to as Phi, reflecting the Ahom's animistic beliefs. Ancestor worship is a longstanding tradition, with rites dating back to the early 13th century, and it was notably performed by Ahom kings like Suhungmung in 1563 to celebrate victories and seek blessings. During the festival, Ahom families engage in rituals at a special pillar called Damkhuta, offering homemade wine and food to their ancestors. The significance of Me-Dam-Me-Phi extends beyond the Ahom community, as non-Ahom residents also participate, viewing it as a cultural event. The government of Assam has recognized the festival's importance by declaring it a public holiday.
