Jinjitsu, also known as Nanakusa no sekku or the Feast of Seven Herbs, is observed in Japan every January 7. This festival is one of the five seasonal celebrations (gosekku) and has its origins in Chinese practices traditionally held at the Japanese imperial court. It involves the custom of eating rice porridge seasoned with seven edible wild herbs, believed to ward off evil spirits and promote good health. The typical herbs used include Chinese celery, shepherd’s purse, cudweed, chickweed, nipplewort, turnip, and daikon radish, although variations exist in different regions. Jinjitsu was originally celebrated on the 7th day of the first lunar month but was moved to January 7 with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. This holiday is now considered part of the New Year celebrations, emphasizing health and longevity while providing a gentle remedy for the digestive system after festive feasting.
