January 7: Merelots – Remembrance Day of the Dead (Armenia)

Merelots, or the Remembrance Day of the Dead, is observed in Armenia every January 7, following the Christmas and Epiphany celebrations on January 6. This holiday is part of the Armenian Apostolic Church's traditions and occurs five times a year, coinciding with major religious holidays such as Easter and the Feast of the Transfiguration. On this day, priests conduct a special Divine Liturgy followed by a memorial service to honor those who have passed away. Families visit the graves of their deceased relatives and friends after the memorial service. Merelots serves not only to remember the dead but also encourages people to express kindness and compassion towards the living. Since 2008, it has been recognized as an official day off in Armenia.
