Emancipation Day, known as Keti Koti, is observed in Suriname every July 1, commemorating the end of slavery in the country. The term Keti Koti translates to “the chains are cut,” symbolizing the liberation from slavery that was officially abolished by the Netherlands in 1863, although a ten-year transit period followed. On this day, many Surinamese visit churches and participate in various events and activities organized in city parks, with a notable tradition of wearing traditional clothing such as koto for men and kotmisse for women. Since 2009, Keti Koti has also been recognized in the Netherlands, where cities host events to celebrate and remember this significant historical milestone.
