Madeira Day is observed in the autonomous region of Madeira, Portugal, every July 1. This holiday commemorates the discovery of Madeira by Portuguese seafarers in 1419 and marks the anniversary of the region's political autonomy granted in 1976. Celebrations include a ceremony at the Legislative Assembly, the laying of flowers at the Monument of Autonomy in Funchal, and a holiday mass at the Cathedral of Funchal. Various cultural events and a spectacular firework display also take place, highlighting the significance of this day for all Madeirans, regardless of their location. Madeira Day was established by the Legislative Assembly of Madeira in 1976 and was renamed in 1989 to emphasize its importance to the Madeiran community.
