July 15: EU Day for the Victims of the Global Climate Crisis

The EU Day for the Victims of the Global Climate Crisis is observed worldwide every July 15. This day was established to honor the memory of victims of the climate crisis and to emphasize the need for collaborative efforts to reduce climate-related deaths. It was initiated by several political groups in the European Parliament, including the European People’s Party Group, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, Renew Europe, the Greens/European Free Alliance, and The Left, and was officially recognized through a joint declaration by the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the European Council on July 13, 2023. The date was chosen to commemorate one of the deadliest days of flooding in Europe in 2021. Activities on this day serve as a reminder of the urgent need for global action against climate change, which has led to increased mortality rates due to extreme weather events, air pollution, food and water insecurity, and mental health impacts.
