Sandinista Revolution Day, also known as FSLN Revolution Day or Liberation Day, is observed in Nicaragua every July 19. This public holiday commemorates the defeat of the Somoza dictatorship during the Nicaraguan Revolution. The Somoza family ruled Nicaragua for over three decades, beginning with Anastasio Somoza García's inauguration in 1937 after forcing President Juan Bautista Sacasa to resign. Opposition to the dictatorship began in the early 1960s, leading to the formation of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in 1961, named after revolutionary Augusto César Sandino. The FSLN launched a military campaign in the 1970s, culminating in the resignation of President Anastasio Somoza Debayle on July 17, 1979, and the FSLN's entry into the capital, Managua, two days later. The anniversary of the establishment of the new Sandinista regime is celebrated as a significant event in Nicaragua's history.
