July 22: State Language Day (Tajikistan)

State Language Day is an official holiday observed in Tajikistan on October 5. Originally celebrated on July 22, the date was changed in 2009 to allow for proper festivities, as the previous date fell during summer break. The holiday commemorates the adoption of the Law “On Language” in 1989, which designated Tajik, a variety of the Persian language, as the official language of the Republic of Tajikistan. Established in 1990 following Tajikistan's independence from the Soviet Union, State Language Day is marked by various festive activities and events that emphasize the importance of the Tajik language in political, social, economic, scientific, and cultural life. Every citizen of Tajikistan is expected to know the state language. Additionally, the day coincides with the birthday of President Emomalii Rahmon.
