Medical Workers’ Day is observed in Ukraine every July 27, celebrating the contributions of healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, lab assistants, and pharmacists. The holiday's origins trace back to the Soviet era when it was established in 1988, initially celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Following the 2022 Russian invasion, Ukraine sought to distance itself from its Soviet past, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to sign a decree in June 2023 that moved the observance to July 27. This day aims to highlight the importance of the national healthcare system and acknowledge the dedication of medical workers in providing care and preserving health. As of January 2023, over 320,000 medical workers were registered in Ukraine's Electronic Healthcare System, underscoring the vital role they play in the country’s healthcare landscape.
