National Sleepy Head Day is observed in Finland every July 27. This informal holiday is linked to the legend of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus, who were young Christians that fell asleep in a cave and awoke 180 years later when persecution had ended. On this day, the last person to wake up in a household, deemed the laziest, is humorously awakened by having water thrown on them or being tossed into a body of water. The largest celebrations occur in Naantali, where a celebrity, chosen for their contributions to the city, is thrown into the sea at 7 a.m. The identity of the sleeper is kept secret until the event, and notable figures such as city mayors, politicians, and artists have participated. Following the morning event, mass celebrations take place throughout the day.
