National Blood Donor Day is observed in Iran every July 31, coinciding with the 9th of Mordad in the Iranian calendar. This day is dedicated to honoring individuals who voluntarily donate blood and its components, such as plasma and red blood cells, to those in need. The holiday commemorates the establishment of the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) in 1974, which aims to foster a culture of responsible blood donation and ensure access to donor blood for patients requiring transfusions. The IBTO is responsible for collecting blood from donors, preparing it for medical use, and managing both mobile and permanent blood donation centers. Islamic teachings support blood donation as a righteous act, provided it is voluntary and does not harm the donor. It is noted that blood donation rates in Iran tend to decline during Ramadan, as many Muslims fast and may not be in optimal health to donate.
