Constitution Day is observed in Armenia every July 5, commemorating the adoption of the first Constitution of Armenia in 1995. This public holiday marks the significant event when 70.3% of voters approved the new constitution, which came after a period of political struggle and the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh War. Following Armenia's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on August 23, 1990, the 1978 Constitution of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic remained in effect until the new constitution was adopted. The day is celebrated with various festivities, including political speeches, parades, concerts, and other community activities. Although the 1995 Constitution is no longer in effect, having been replaced by an amended constitution in 2005, Constitution Day remains a significant occasion in Armenian national identity.
