National Children’s Literature Day is observed in Iran every July 9, coinciding with the 18th day of the month of Tir in the Solar Hijri calendar. This holiday honors Mehdi Azar-Yazdi, a prominent Iranian children's writer known for his contributions to Persian children's literature. Azar-Yazdi, born in 1921 in Yazd, began his literary career in 1956 and is best known for his collection "Good Stories for Good Children," which adapts classical Persian literature for young readers. His work received notable recognition, including a UNESCO award and the Imperial Award for the Book of the Year. The day also marks the anniversary of Azar-Yazdi's death in 2009, and it is celebrated with the presentation of a literary award named after him, given annually to the author of the best children’s book in Persian.
