Lesbian Visibility Day (Día de la Visibilidad Lésbica) is observed in Chile every July 9 to honor the memory of Mónica Briones, a Chilean painter and sculptor who was murdered in 1984 in what is considered the first documented case of a lesbophobic hate crime in the country. The day was established by Chilean queer rights activists in 2015, following Briones's tragic death, to highlight the specific issues and challenges faced by lesbian women. Briones, who studied at the University of Chile and was known for selling her artwork in Parque Forestal, was attacked due to her sexual orientation, which sparked a movement for lesbian rights in Chile. The Colectiva Lésbica Feminista Ayuquelén, the first LGBT advocacy group in Chile, was founded shortly after her death. While Chile has made significant progress in LGBT rights, including legalizing same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples in 2022, Lesbian Visibility Day serves as a reminder of the journey towards equality since the era of Pinochet's military dictatorship.
