June 10: Heraldry Day

International Heraldry Day is observed worldwide every June 10, celebrating the art and science of heraldry, which includes the design and display of armorial insignia and the recording of genealogies. The holiday was established in 2013 by the International Association of Amateur Heralds and is marked by various events aimed at popularizing heraldry as a hobby. The date was chosen to commemorate the knighting of Geoffrey Plantagenet by King Henry I of England in 1128, during which he received a blue shield bearing six gold lions, considered one of the oldest examples of heraldry. While the importance of coats of arms has diminished in modern times, they continue to be used by organizations, individuals, and regions for identification purposes. Different countries maintain their own heraldic traditions and authorities to regulate the use of coats of arms, ensuring their proper use and preventing misuse.
