The day was established by ICP Care, a nonprofit organization founded by Donna Benavides after she lost her son to ICP in 2003. The observance aims to support and inform pregnant women affected by this condition, which is characterized by symptoms such as itching without a visible rash, dark urine, and fatigue. ICP typically occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy and has varying incidence rates across regions, influenced by genetic and environmental factors.
