June 11: William Davis Miners’ Memorial Day (Canada)

William Davis Miners' Memorial Day, also known as Miners' Memorial Day or Davis Day, is observed in coal mining communities in Nova Scotia, Canada, every June 11. This memorial day commemorates the death of William Davis, a coal miner killed on June 11, 1925, during a strike against the shutdown of drinking water and electricity in New Waterford. The event resulted in serious injuries to many other miners due to police force, and subsequent vandalism of company facilities. Following the introduction of Davis Day, miners in Nova Scotia vowed not to work on this day; however, its significance diminished after the last coal mine in the province closed. Over time, Davis Day has evolved into a remembrance day for all miners who have lost their lives in the shafts across Nova Scotia.
