National New Mexico Day is observed every June 14, celebrating New Mexico as the 47th state to join the United States. This day recognizes the state's rich history, culture, and heritage, which includes its Indigenous roots and colonial past. Long before European arrival, the region was inhabited by Native American cultures such as the Mogollon and Ancestral Puebloans, who had extensive trade networks. The Spanish claimed the territory in 1598, naming it Santa Fe de Nuevo México, and established Santa Fe as the provincial capital in 1610. After a series of historical events, including the Pueblo Revolt and the Mexican-American War, New Mexico was formally admitted to the Union on January 6, 1912. National New Mexico Day was established as part of the National State Days project by National Day Calendar in 2017, which aims to honor each state in the order of their admission to the Union.
