Every June 19, Uruguayans celebrate the birthday of José Artigas, a national hero known as the “father of Uruguayan nationhood.” This day is also recognized as Never Again Day (Día del nunca más), a remembrance day for the victims of the civic-military dictatorship that lasted from 1973 to 1985. José Gervasio Artigas was born in 1764 and became involved in military and revolutionary activities, advocating for independence from Spanish rule. His efforts included organizing the League of Free Peoples in 1814. The date of June 19 was chosen for Never Again Day to coincide with Artigas' birthday, which was declared a public holiday in recognition of his contributions to the nation. In 2006, President Tabaré Vázquez officially established this remembrance day, highlighting its significance in Uruguayan history.
