June 19: Dano Festival (Surit-nal) (North Korea and South Korea)

The Dano Festival, also known as Surit-nal, is observed in both North and South Korea on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, with the next occurrence on June 19. This festival has its roots in ancient Korea, where it was a day for spiritual rites, accompanied by songs, dance, and wine. Traditional customs include women washing their hair in water boiled with sweet flag for shine and participating in swing games, while men wore iris roots around their waists to ward off evil spirits and engaged in stone battles and wrestling. Participants typically don blue and red clothing and dye their hairpins red with iris roots. The festival also features the preparation of wheel-patterned herb rice cakes, symbolizing the festival's connection to nature and spirituality. Despite its historical significance, the popularity of Dano has diminished over time.
