June 19: Farmer’s Day (Ukraine)

Farmer’s Day is observed in Ukraine every June 19, celebrating the contributions of farmers to the agricultural sector. This official professional holiday was established in 2020, commemorating the adoption of the Law of Ukraine “On Farmers” by the Verkhovna Rada in 2003, which aimed to support the production, processing, and sale of agricultural products. The day serves to facilitate the development of the farming movement, which is crucial for food security and the preservation of rural communities. The concept behind Farmer’s Day was developed by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine in 2017 and was officially signed into law by President Volodymyr Zelensky in June 2020. As of 2020, over 33,000 farms were operating in Ukraine, constituting about 70% of economically active agricultural enterprises, although many faced challenges due to limited resources and high credit costs. The Ukrainian government has introduced initiatives to support the farming sector, including the Farms and Agricultural Cooperation Development Concept, which aims to increase the number of farms and create new jobs in agriculture.
