June 2: Republic Day (Italy)

Republic Day, known as Festa della Repubblica, is observed in Italy every June 2. This holiday commemorates the establishment of the republic and the exile of the male descendants of the House of Savoy following a referendum held on June 2, 1946, where the majority of Italians voted for a republic over a monarchy. Prior to this, the national day was celebrated on the first Sunday in June until June 2 was officially recognized in 2000. The day is marked by military parades, with the first parade taking place in 1948 on Via Dei Fori Imperiali in Rome, which continues to be the main venue for the celebrations. The parade has only been canceled three times, in 1963, 1976, and 1992.
