June 21: Agriculture Day (Indonesia)

Agriculture Day, known as Hari Krida Pertanian, is observed in Indonesia every June 21 to appreciate the contributions of individuals working in the agricultural sector. Launched in 1972, this day coincides with the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere and marks the end of the harvest season for some crops, making it a fitting occasion for expressing gratitude for the year's harvest. Agriculture plays a crucial role in Indonesia's economy, contributing approximately 15% to the country's GDP, with over 40% of the labor force engaged in this sector. The celebration has roots in traditional thanksgiving ceremonies and recognizes both large plantations and small family-owned farms, which produce a diverse range of crops, including coffee, palm oil, and various fruits and vegetables. Agriculture Day also signifies the transition from the old agricultural year to the new one according to the traditional Javanese calendrical system, Pranata Mangsa. Additionally, this day is part of a broader recognition of the agricultural community, alongside National Farmers’ Day, celebrated on September 24.
