Bannockburn Day is observed in Scotland every June 24 to commemorate a significant victory in the First War of Scottish Independence, specifically the Battle of Bannockburn, which took place in 1314. This battle is regarded as one of the most crucial confrontations during the Wars of Scottish Independence, a series of military campaigns between Scotland and England in the 13th and 14th centuries. The conflict began in 1296, and by 1304, England had conquered most of Scotland. However, in 1306, Robert the Bruce became King of Scots and aimed to reclaim the territory. By 1314, he had recaptured most Scottish castles and prepared to intercept English forces attempting to relieve Stirling Castle. The two-day battle concluded with a decisive Scottish victory, marking a pivotal step toward Scotland's eventual independence, although it would take another 14 years of warfare before formal recognition was achieved with the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton.
