The Feast of Saint Nuno of Saint Mary is observed in Portugal on November 6. This feast commemorates Nuno Álvares Pereira, a significant figure in Portuguese history who played a crucial role in the country's independence from Castile. Born on June 24, 1360, Pereira became a renowned military leader by the age of 24 when he was appointed Constable of Portugal. After the death of his wife, he joined the Order of Carmelites, adopting the name Nuno of Saint Mary, and lived as a friar until his death on April 1, 1431. He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1940, with formal celebrations occurring on April 26, 2009. While the Order of Carmelites and Portugal celebrate the feast on November 6, other countries observe his feast day on April 1.
