Statehood Day is observed in Slovenia every June 25, commemorating the country's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The holiday marks the passage of legislation related to Slovenia's independence, which occurred on this date, despite the formal declaration taking place on June 26. The celebration follows a referendum held in December 1990, where 88.5% of Slovenians voted in favor of independence. Statehood Day is an official non-working holiday, during which schools, colleges, and businesses are closed. The declaration of independence sparked the Ten-Day War with Yugoslavia, leading to the Briony Agreement, which resulted in the withdrawal of Yugoslav forces from Slovenia. This day should not be confused with Independence and Unity Day, celebrated on December 26.
