International Day of Deafblindness, also known as International Day of Persons with Deafblindness, is observed worldwide every June 27. This date commemorates the birthday of Helen Keller, the first deafblind person in the U.S. to earn a bachelor’s degree. The day aims to increase public awareness about the rights and challenges faced by individuals with deafblindness, a condition characterized by varying degrees of visual impairment and hearing loss. The observance was initiated by the World Federation of the Deafblind (WFDB), an NGO dedicated to improving the quality of life for persons with deafblindness. Notably, June 27 is also recognized as Helen Keller Day in the United States, a designation established by presidential proclamation in 2006.
