Press and Media Workers Day is observed in Uzbekistan every June 27, celebrating the contributions of media professionals in the country. This professional holiday was officially established in 1993 by President Islam Karimov, with the first celebration taking place in 1994. The date commemorates the publication of the first Uzbek-language newspaper, “Taraqqiy” (Progress), on June 27, 1906, marking a significant milestone in the history of the national press. In Uzbekistan, the media landscape is primarily dominated by state-owned newspapers, with 17 radio stations and 28 television broadcast stations operating in the country. Despite the official abolition of state censorship in 2002, press freedom remains limited, as journalists often face self-censorship and risks of imprisonment for their work. The Uzbekistan National News Agency serves as the national news agency, controlling much of the information disseminated within the country.
