International Lightning Safety Day is observed worldwide every June 28 to honor the victims of a tragic lightning strike in Uganda that claimed the lives of at least 18 schoolchildren in 2011. The day aims to promote lightning safety and protection, particularly in regions prone to lightning injuries. Established during the International Symposium on Strategic Interventions to Mitigate the Hazard of Lightning in Lusaka, Zambia, in 2015, it has garnered support from delegates of 17 countries. The observance highlights the importance of educating the public about personal safety measures during thunderstorms and the implementation of lightning protection systems. On this day, individuals are encouraged to seek shelter indoors during storms and to avoid contact with electrical devices and plumbing.
