Lovers’ Day is observed in Azerbaijan every year on June 30 to commemorate the tragic love story of Ilham and Fariza Allahverdiyev, a married couple who became victims of the Black January events in 1990. Their wedding anniversary has been unofficially celebrated as Lovers’ Day since 2004. Ilham, who was actively involved in the independence movement, was shot by Soviet soldiers during a protest, and Fariza, devastated by his death, ultimately took her own life shortly after. The couple is buried side by side at the Alley of Martyrs in Baku, which has become a significant location associated with their story. The day serves as a poignant reminder of their love and the sacrifices made during a turbulent period in Azerbaijan's history.
