National SAFE Day is observed every June 4 to promote firearm safety and honor the memory of individuals, particularly children, who have died due to unsafe firearm storage. The day was founded by the Brooklynn Mae Mohler Foundation in 2016, established by Jacob and Darchel Mohler after their daughter, Brooklynn, was accidentally shot and killed by a friend who accessed an unsecured handgun. The acronym SAFE stands for four essential gun safety tips: secure all firearms in the home, ask about unsecured firearms when visiting others, frequently discuss firearm dangers with children, and educate others about safety. Statistics highlight the urgency of this issue, with many accidental firearm-related injuries occurring at home. Observers are encouraged to ensure their firearms are stored safely and to spread awareness of the SAFE rules, particularly among other parents and guardians.
