June 6: Journalist Day (Ukraine)

Journalist Day is observed in Ukraine every June 6, celebrating the contributions of journalists, reporters, and editors. Established in 1994 by President Leonid Kravchuk, the date commemorates the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine's membership in the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) on June 6, 1992. This day is marked by various ceremonies, symposiums, and informal gatherings such as parties and picnics. While primarily a celebration for journalists, other media workers also partake, although they have their own separate holiday on November 16. The day is not a non-working holiday unless it coincides with a weekend. Historically, during the presidency of Viktor Yanukovich, journalists would hold peaceful demonstrations on this day to protest censorship and advocate for press freedom and the right to freedom of expression.
