Korean Children’s Union Foundation Day is observed in North Korea every June 6. This public holiday celebrates the Korean Children’s Union, an organization that prepares children for membership in the Kimilsungist-Kimjongilist Youth League. The Union was founded by Kim Il-sung on June 6, 1946, six months after the establishment of the Youth League, which was formed to support the national liberation movement. On this day, children typically aged 9 or 10 are admitted to the Union, marking an important milestone in their lives. New members participate in regular meetings where they learn about Juche ideology, the Songun policy, and the biographies of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. Admission to the Union can also occur on other significant public holidays, underscoring its importance in North Korean society.
