Flag Day is observed in Peru every June 7 to commemorate the Battle of Arica and the heroic act of Colonel Alfonso Ugarte. This battle, fought in 1880 between Peru and Chile, is significant in the context of the War of the Pacific. Ugarte, carrying the Peruvian flag, famously rode his horse over a cliff into the Pacific Ocean to prevent Chilean troops from capturing it. Although Peru lost the battle, the day is marked to honor Ugarte's sacrifice. The current national flag, adopted in 1825, features a vertical triband of red and white, symbolizing bravery and peace, respectively. On Flag Day, flag hoisting ceremonies take place, accompanied by the military march Marcha de Banderas, although it is not a public holiday and remains a regular working day.
