Last Friday in May: European Neighbors’ Day

European Neighbors' Day is observed worldwide on every last Friday of May. It originated in 1999 in Paris, initiated by a group of residents in the 17th district who formed the association Paris d'Amis to combat isolation and strengthen community ties. The first celebration involved over 10,000 residents from 800 apartment buildings. Following its success, the event expanded to other districts in Paris and French cities, and in 2003, Belgium joined, leading to its international recognition and the official renaming to European Neighbors' Day in 2004. The event aims to address issues such as individualism and loneliness by encouraging neighbors to interact through parties, luncheons, and various activities, fostering a sense of community based on mutual help, respect, and understanding. Today, it is celebrated in about 1,400 towns and cities across more than 30 European countries.
