Last Wednesday in March: Document Freedom Day

Document Freedom Day is observed worldwide every last Wednesday of March and aims to celebrate and promote the importance of open standards in digital communication. Launched in 2008 by the Free Software Foundation Europe, the day emphasizes the need for open formats that allow users to exchange information freely, independent of specific software vendors. It highlights the issue of vendor lock-in, where users are restricted to proprietary formats that limit their software choices and can incur high costs. The event has been managed since 2016 by volunteers from the Digital Freedom Foundation, which also oversees other related events. Activities are organized by volunteers in various countries, with notable participation from nations such as Germany, Argentina, and Japan. The largest celebration occurred in 2013, featuring 60 events across 30 countries. Document Freedom Day encompasses all forms of digital data, including text documents, artwork, and music.
